Google is making inroads into mobility and automotive space
Google I/O 2023 was the major flagship event to share the new product launch and this year’s theme was “Generative AI” and its integration with different products. The event was also interesting for the mobility and automotive sector as Google is looking to integrate its Android OS with in-car infotainment system. Further, there are many other major applications including “Bard”, “PaLM”, “Google Cloud”, “Enterprise Search” etc which can transform mobility.

Some of the key product announcements for the mobility and automotive sectors are:
Immersive View for routes
Google Maps is used to get 20 billion km of direction every day and has important tools for everyone. Google added the immersive view feature in 2022 to allow people to view the place before they visit. The company uses AI and computer vision to create a digital model of the world by putting together billions of Street views and aerial images. Now, the riders can preview their journey with an Immersive View for routes. Immersive View for routes will be launched in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo, and Venice.
Android Auto
Android Automotive OS (AAOS), launched in March 2017, is an open-source mobile operating system that runs on Linux. The automakers could use it in their cars. Google has launched Android Auto, an app that runs on the user’s phone and wirelessly communicates with and projects navigation, parking, media, and messaging to the vehicle’s infotainment system. Google Auto will allow riders to integrate different video conferencing apps, gaming, and YouTube with the car’s infotainment system. The company is also bringing Waze navigation to its Android Auto.
Many car companies like Chevrolet, Renault, Volvo, Polestar, and Honda are using the Google Built-in system and it is expected to double by the end of 2023.
Generative AI and Enterprise Search
Google is looking to empower its various offering with generative AI. The company is building a platform to allow developers to create generative chat and enterprise search applications and Generative AI support in Vertex AI. One of the interesting example:
Uber is creating generative AI for customer-service chatbots and agent assist capabilities, which handle a range of common service issues with human-like interactions with the aim of achieving greater customer satisfaction and cost efficiency. Additionally, Uber is working on using Google synthetic data systems (a technique for improving the quality of LLMs) in areas like product development, fraud detection, and employee productivity. Generative AI will have a big impact on the mobility and transit sector. It is important to keep track of how the technology is evolving and how it will impact different sectors. In the past, we wrote an article about How ChatGPT will be game changer for Public Transit agencies?
