European Union adopted New Urban Mobility Framework to move towards sustainable urban mobility

Transportation plays a key role to make cities liveable, equitable, sustainable, and healthy. European Commission committed to reducing 90% emission by 2050, by building a smart, competitive, safe, accessible, and affordable transport system. In 2020, The European Commission presented its Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy and Action Plan’ of 82 initiatives that will guide our work for the next four years (2021-2024).

European Commission formally released its new Urban Mobility Framework which includes:

  • TEN-T regulation
  • ITS Directive
  • An action plan to boost long-distance and cross-border passenger rail services

The Commission will update and publish Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) by the end of 2022 to Member States on the national programs to support regions and cities in the roll-out of effective sustainable urban mobility plans that would help achieve EU goals.

The amended TEN-T Regulation proposes to improve urban mobility in urban nodes as Member States have to ensure better connectivity and multi-modal hubs among others.
