BMTC launched an app for digital bus passes on a trial basis

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) launched a three-month pilot for mobile-based digital passes for passengers in the city. BMTC is one of the largest city bus operators in India, operating a fleet of more than 6,500 buses and carrying more than 4.4 million passengers daily. BMTC has partnered with Tummoc to offer mobile ticketing options to passengers using QR code technology.

Passengers can purchase the BMTC passes (daily, weekly, monthly) through a mobile app and makes a payment using UPI or other digital modes.

  • Daily passes should book on days of commute.
  • Weekly passes can be booked prior to the upcoming week.
  • Monthly passes can be purchased on every first week of the month.
Passengers can activate the pass before or after boarding. However, they will need to do the validation within 30 minutes. This will require BMTC to implement new ETM (Electronic Ticketing Machines) with QR code features.

How will it works:

1. Passenger needs to download the app from the Tummoc app store

2. After registration, a pass will be generated along with a unique ID and dynamic QR-code

3a. While traveling, the passenger will need to show the digital pass on their phone which can be validated by the conductor through ETM (Electronic Ticketing Machines)

3b. In case ETM is not working or the conductor does not have a QR code-readable ETM, the passenger can validate the pass by scanning the QR code badge carried by the conductor

4. Travel data will be captured for reconciliation and analysis.

BMTC is planning to go for conductor-less or driver-only buses by 2023. Conductors can be outside the bus at bus stations to check the digital passes. This will help the agency to save huge manpower costs. The corporation will launch a tender for full AFCS (Automatic Fare Collection System) after the completion of the pilot.
