VC Activity & Trends January 2023 – Investments in Mobility Startups
The funding in the mobility sector had a slow start in 2023 as the overall funding market is down. Only 27 startups raised funding of $704 million in January 2023, compared to 27 startups that raised $2.53 billion in January 2022, a decline of more than 65%. Overall, 2022 was a great year for the startups in the mobility and logistics sector as 383 startups raised $24 billion in the year.
VC funds are doubling down on later-stage rounds compared to seed and pre-seed rounds. However, the investors are backing early-stage startups. VC and Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) continued to invest money in:
Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure
Urban Air Mobility
Hydrogen
According to the Mobility Innovators funding tracker, 27 startups raised $703 million in a just month. The smallest funding was $265K (Seed) by eWaka and the largest round of $150 million by Archer Aviation .
The funding trends in the last 13 months are as follows:
VC investors continued to invest in the growth stage / later rounds, compared to pre-seed/seed rounds. Out of 27 deals, only 25% of deals are in the seed / pre-series A stage. VC firms are doubling down more on existing deals, which is in line with current market trends. There is increased interest in alternative funding options.
