Transport for London provides real-time crowdedness level on TfL Go app

The pandemic pushed TfL (Transport for London) to change its strategy to promote in-house app – TfL Go. The agency continued to enhance the capabilities of TfL Go app. In July 2021, TfL has added the real-time crowdedness level for London Underground stations. The riders can find out the level of crowdedness in the trains and plan their travel in advance.

The big difference is the data used by TfL to predict the level of crowdedness. Previously, the agency used Oyster ticketing data and a contactless ticketing system to understand network travel patterns. TfL will use aggregated and depersonalized data from the station’s WiFi network under the new system. Customers will be able to access real-time information about overall crowding at platforms and interchange points via the TfL Go app.
