Malaga, Spain starts Autonomous Bus trial with 12-meter-long bus
The city of Málaga is the first place in Europe to start a trial of full-size electric autonomous electric buses. The project is launched in collaboration with the city of Málaga, EMT (Empresa Malagueña de Transportes), Grupo Avanza (the operator), and Irizar (the manufacturer).
The autonomous bus will start off by serving a route between the Levante dock and the city center and will make an eight-kilometer round-trip from the city center to the port, six times daily.
The 12-meter-long bus will have a capacity for 70 passengers and will run on the city’s Line 90 on representing a significant milestone for driverless technology in Spain. An autonomous bus will take to the streets of Malaga on February 28 and will last until the end of March 2021.
The autonomous bus will still have a driver onboard, but only as a safety measure should something go wrong – and also because having a driver onboard is still a legal requirement in Spain.
