LA Metro initiated NextGen Program to restructure the Bus Network

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) is the country’s second-largest bus system. However, the city has seen a steady decline in the number of riders.

LA Metro initiated the new project – NextGen Bus System in October 2o2o. The project’s main goal is to restructure the city bus network by increasing bus frequency, improving service on most routes, and putting more buses in high-demand areas. LA Metro wants to better serve current riders while also attracting new ones.

LA Metro will make service changes in the following three months: December 2020, June 2021, and December 2021. The majority of local and rapid buses will be combined under the plan. These new lines will stop less frequently than a local bus but more frequently than a rapid bus.

In addition, the Metro intended to extend transit signal priority to all lines. The end result will be a faster door-to-door trip for all riders, with stops being a quarter-mile apart on average.

The city is also planning on launching an on-demand shuttle bus service called Metro Micro.
