YCombinator 2023

Interesting Logistics, Cleantech and Transportation Startups from Y Combinator S23 and W23 Batch

Y Combinator is one of the world’s prestigious accelerators in the world. The YC has funded more than 4,000 startups which have a combined valuation of more than $600 billion. Each year, YC runs two cohorts – Summer and Winter. In 2023, there are 208 startups in S23 and 271 in the W23 batch. It is one of the most difficult accelerators to join as more than 44,000 startups apply for each cohort, i.e. a success rate of 0.5%. The founders need to make their pitch in 10 minutes which decide if they are in or not.

Building a successful venture is a process and requires lots of grit and passion. YC has explained the startup process in their office:

YCombinator - Process

YC follows a standard deal for all its investments and invests $500,000 in every company which is part of the cohort on 2 separate SAFEs (Simple Agreement for Future Equity):

  • Invest $125,000 on a post-money safe in return for 7% of the company (the “$125k SAFE”)
  • Invest $375,000 on an uncapped safe with a Most Favored Nation (“MFN”) provision (the “MFN safe”)

The MFN safe will take on the terms of the lowest cap SAFE (or other most favorable terms) issued between the start of the batch and the company’s next equity round. SAFE allows to give the company money now but at the terms which will negotiate with other investors later.

In S23 and W23, there are a wide variety of startups from different sectors and geographies. In this article, we have listed some of the interesting startups from logistics, electric vehicles, and transportation verticals.

HyLight, based in Paris, France, builds and operates autonomous airships for long-range monitoring. The flying device is a crossover between drone and airship technology. Like a drone, it is easily controllable and transportable. And, like an airship, it is extremely energy-efficient, enabling them to fly for up to 10 hours at a slow speed (22mph) for optimal data collection which represents a range of 220 miles. Utilities and infrastructure companies can use it for gas leakage detection or defect on power lines.

Conduit, based in San Francisco, USA, is building software for warehouses to automate scheduling with truckers.
